Frequently Asked Questions

Will you draw my character for free?

Unfortunately I don't have time to draw people's characters for free. You can commission me for artwork - I'm always open for con badges or sketch cards, and they're inexpensive. :) Visit the commission page for details

How much will it cost to knit me something?

Send me an email and let me know what you're after, I'll give you a price.

Are you open for knitting commissions?

Yes I am, for simple items such as scarves and hats.

Can I use a piece of art on my web site/for this printed application?

I prefer that people ask before using my work - just

These guidelines apply to my art from my various web pages or art galleries that you'd like to use with the exception of official sketch card images. If you get sketch cards, hey, feel free to post them wherever whenever, it's completely in your right.

Why 'Flying Armadillo?'

Way back in 1993 I started using a Flying Armadillo as a mascot for signing off comics. I was in Australia when I started using this little critter and it stuck, especially seeing how uncommon armadillos are in the land down under. I still use the flying armadillo because it's a fun mark and mascot.

Are you from Texas?

Nope! And I'm not in Australia any more, either. I'm located in Canada, the great white north. This is why the Armadillo is sometimes represented as being shaggy. It gets cold up here! Northern Flying Armadillos need a good coat of fur.

How do you make your art?

That all depends on what I'm doing. I use a variety of techniques including vector art, digital paitning, marker and pencil crayon, watercolour, graphite and ink. Every time I tackle a piece, I do it in a new way unless I'm sticking to a theme that I know works. Art is all about experimentation.

Can you teach me how to draw?

I'm not available for teaching, but you van go to my how to draw section for some drawing tutorials.

What software do you use?

For my web site I use hand coding and the drag and drop ease of Dreamweaver.
For art I use Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Painter and Flash.
For design I use the above and Adobe Indesign (which I am learning to love) and I have experience with Quark Xpress (and I never want to use it again). I use Acrobat to PDF all of my files. I LOVE Acrobat and I think every business should have a copy. It makes sharing documents so easy.

Where can I get this software?

You can download trials of the Adobe CS from the Adobe site.
If you want the software, it's hideously expensive, but worth the expense. For those just getting their feet wet, I recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements because it gives you a good stepping stone to the Photoshop world.

Do you use a Mac or a PC?

I am proficient in both platforms. The two can work very well in unison if you know how to deal with the quirks of both operating systems. I do love Apple and I love working on them but I believe that PCs also have their strengths. Knowing how to work cross-platform is a very, very useful skill, especially in a world full of Windows. I use a PC at home and a Mac at the office.
